Mike Dandron, Principal

Dear Bangor Families,

We are a few weeks into the new school year. The end of the first marking period is coming to a quick end. The last day of marking period 1 is on November 3rd. The middle school and high school will host Parent Teacher conferences on Thursday, November 9th from 1:00 – 4:00 pm and 5:00 – 8:00 pm. I would like to encourage all parents to come out and join us for this event!

This past week I received a phone call from the Michigan Lottery. One of our Bangor teachers, Lucas Smith (middle school), had received the Excellence in Education award. This award is given by the Michigan Lottery to 34 recipients state wide for the 2017-2018 school year. Mr. Smith was nominated by a community member or colleague based on his persistent efforts in making sure Bangor students receive the best education possible to his ability. I commend Mr. Smith for his excellence in and out of the classroom and for his dedication to the Bangor student body. Mr. Smith leads by example and is a role model to our children. Thank you Mr. Smith for all you do!

Gone Boarding: What is it?

Gone Boarding was a class created by students at Forest Hills Northern and teacher Bill Curtis. Bill Curtis asked students what they would want to engineer and design, instead of bird boxes in a shop class. The response was boards. Skate boards, surf boards, paddle boards and snow boards. This is how and where this concept and ideas came from. Bill Curtis and students created a class where students design, engineer, shape, mold and construct their very own boards. As Bangor continues to implement STEAM initiatives, there are many levels and layers to this class. On top of engineering and designing the students get to use surf boards, skate boards and snow boards at least twice a week. If the waves are up at South Beach we load the boards and get the wet-suits on and surf South Beach. If the weather is nice we ride the paved trail from South Haven to Van Buren State Park on our long boards. When the snow flies we head to Timber Ridge for some snowboarding. On top of all this, the students will mentor kindergartners and first graders at South Walnut in the Fall or Winter. Here we will teach the little ones about balance, posture on a board and heel to toe work. Lastly, the students in this class have the opportunity to visit and tour Burton snowboards headquarters in Vermont, this October. They will also have opportunities to go to Channel Islands in California and tour surf board construction. There are other big name companies partnered with Gone Boarding and Bill Curtis. This class is simply amazing! There is nothing else like it anywhere. Bangor is very lucky to have such a class. Get out there and get boarding. Mr. Meyers

If you ever have any questions at all, please feel free to stop by or contact the main office at 269-427-6844.

Sincerely,

Michael Dandron

SchoolBlocks offers a unique and powerful personalized search system. A member of the public, searching for "homework" might see an announcement from the school as the first result. However, if the user is logged in, they would see their teacher’s latest homework assignment as the top result.
